When Free File is Really Free - Federal Only

(link) Free File Instruction Page - at www.irs.gov

Hello fellow Tax Payers! It will not be long until Tax Time is upon us. In today's blog post, my goal is to help you by-pass the horribly expensive route of filing your Taxes at a tax Firm...Paying $300.00 - $?00.00 in Bank and Preparation Fees.

I worked for a major Preparation Firm for 6 years seasonally. Each year, at the November Holiday, they begin sending out mailings and spend millions in advertising to get tax payers into their greedy hands. This begins the process of attaching high interest loans to your Anticipated tax refund. Please do not take this to mean that many, many people do not need a Tax Professional to assist and prepare taxes for them, but the lower income Individuals and Families often Do Not. It is the Low Income, and Earned Income Credit folks that are the Cream and Butter of Tax Prep Firms.

During the first part of Tax Season, the lower income people pour in, getting Loans that are usually 95% interest, all the way up to 300%+. This is so the Poor families can Get Their Money ASAP! It is a trend that many "loyal tax customers" have been locked into for 8 years. If you do not get anything else I write, get this: You can File your own taxes on-line, Free. If you have it Directly Deposited into a bank or even mailed, you will have your money (if your information is correct, your return is not rejected for errors, and no other weird delays occur) in less than 2 Weeks. Usually 8 - 10 days.

In our State and many surrounding States the average Tax Payer does Not "net" (bring  home) more than $300.00 per week. On average in the Southern U.S., tax payers who make $50,000.00 per year do not "net" more than $700.00  per week. Having Federal, State (unless your State does not collect Income Tax), Social Security/Medicare (FICA), Insurance, Union Fees, HSA and any other deductions taken from your check or direct deposit before you get it does not leave much available income.

If your tax return is simply Earned Income, you can probably file your own taxes without paying an extra dime. If it is too hard for you to understand how to fill out a US Tax Return without assistance, You can use Tax Software through the IRS website for a low upfront price, and sometimes Free.

I want to help you navigate the Free File Website Provided by the IRS. I want to help you keep more money for your precious family and home. Earlier, the Fees I mentioned were only the Bank Fees on each Tax Return, this was not even what you are charged for Preparation Fees, and the Insurance that is quickly added to your return, as a practice, and only brought to your attention at "signing" time, where the Preparer is sticking form after form in your face, telling you to "sign here". They will say something like, "and we have included _________ guarantee, or _________ assurance / insurance, that if there are any errors on your return, it will pay any extra taxes .... " Preparers are strongly trained to include the guarantee on every return, they are often given extra bonuses for including it on every return. They are scolded and terminated if there are a big lack of Ins! urance Fees included.

The extra guarantee is around $29.00.  Here again, Please get what I am saying - This is Important information. If your return is "simple", meaning Only, that your return is W-2 income only, any errors on that type of return would be on the Tax Firm. They still would not be responsible to pay the possible extra tax liability, if you owed any extra taxes. On a simple return, the possibility of a greater tax liability is rare. It does not pay for fraud, or omission (not including all information), of income by the tax payer. The Tax Payer is always responsible for their taxes and tax return. That also goes for withholding on your payroll checks. The employee is responsible to make sure enough taxes are being withheld from their return. It is the tax payer who! is responsible.

Most W-2 only returns, do not need the extra insurance, guarantee, or assurance. BUT - if your tax return is complicated, it will be the best $29.00 you ever paid. There were many returns I prepared, that I refused to complete without the Guarantee, because mistakes on that level usually take the IRS a year or two to find, and on the complicated returns, chances are there will be extra Tax Liability. One more note, many tax payers who approached me would attempt to get pricing on their return, I would ask, How complicated is it?, the person would answer; not too complicated...9 times out of 10, it was complicated enough it would take them 4 - 14 hours or more to prepare it themselves.

*******************************************************************************************

I am going to attempt to navigate you through the Free File page at the IRS Website (link at top of page), and help you find the best product for you. Once you have made the decision to Free File, I would advise you to ALWAYS enter your product through the IRS Website. This will prevent some of the scandalous practices of Tax Software providers. (TaxSlayer used to be a company I recommended highly, but No More. I first filed, using their software through the IRS Website, and it was Free, then the next year it was more expensive, because I used their Links emailed to me, instead of the IRS website. This year, when I filed using their software, their software did not catch an error on my State Return...it should not have let me file any of my return.&nbs! p;An error message should have stopped the process. It did not. My Federal went through. They charged me the highest price ever. They charged me for State filing, a product I did not receive.
Over the course of several years, I had referred several customers to them. I contacted them, which was not easy. And, I was never able to speak to a live person. I will not use, or recommend TaxSlayer again.

I am a tax professional, I could have done it on paper and mailed it in, but I know the importance of having a record of tax filings, and being low-income that first year, it was Free. If I would have used the IRS links to their website this year (2009 taxes), it would have been Free. If this can happen to a person who has prepared Taxes for over 30 years. I feel for the uninformed tax software customer.
  1. Go to http://www.irs.gov/ - there is a link at the top of this page, but only use this for information...when you are ready to really file, go to the IRS website directly.
  2. This page is in two halves. The top of the page: is the "traditional free file - I want tax software with step-by-step help. There are two "push buttons" a). "I will choose a Free File Company", and b). "Help Me Find a Free File Company"
  3. On this top of the page, there are many companies with different products. By letting the IRS help you choose, you will get the best product for your income level. Keep in mind, until your return is actually "filed", you can change software companies.
  4. If you choose the "I will choose..." push-button on the top half of this page, will issue you a warning, "You are about to leave the IRS website, do you want to continue?" Say Yes.
  5. If you let the IRS help you choose, you will come to another IRS page, (link) Information about what to look for and steps to take income limits, and possible charges to watch for.
  6. There are 6 Questions to answer so the IRS software finder can best assist you. You will need to know your filing status. Your approximate adjusted gross income, your State, if you are possibly eligible for Earned Income Credit, and if you and/or your spouse is Military.
  7. On each question (except State), there is a link you can click on for further definition. The links will help you find the answer or approximate answer to the question. Remeber, you can always go back.
  8. When you have completed that, you will then get a message that says, "you are about to leave the IRS website. Just say yes. [At this time the IRS is giving an error, I have sent them a message and finish] - There should be a listing from the best match first of the companies that can best help you.
  9. Keep in mind, the more help you request from Tax Software companies, the more they can charge. Keep track of your time and what they are charging you.
  10. August 14, 2010 - This is a time of transition as far as the IRS is concerned, many tax rules and codes are being adjusted according to what Congress does...so this will be updated accordingly.

The Second Half of the Free File Page

"Free File Fillable Forms - I want to fill in the tax forms and file them online without tax software"

There are Two Push Buttons here as well:

  • Start my Free File Fillable Forms
  • Finish my Free File Fillable Forms
You may want to bookmark this page, unless the computer you are using is used by more persons than you. You can always return to http://www.irs.gov/, and link to the Individuals/Free File page, and return here. I am going to save this second half for the next blog.

FFFF (Free File Fillable Forms) is just like old school filling out paper forms, except it is on-line, and you can link directly to the IRS for further information. This is completely free, no matter the income limits, and complexity. This is Federal only. Who knows, perhaps they will develop links to the States soon.

Coming Soon...FFFF (no, not the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers! - Free File Fillable Forms!)

Optimisations

There are plenty of optimisations that I have tried with CryptoMiniSat. I will try to list a few that I finally didn't consider using, but could be implemented later to get around 4-8% speedup each.

It seems a good idea to use a separate CNF simplifier such as SatELite before executing the SAT solver. The reasoning is, that even though one can import (or copy-paste) the code from SatELite, the memory will stay fragmented: variable elimination might remove half the variables, and so the arrays that store variable values will have unused bytes in them, using a larger footprint than necessary, thus causing cache misses. Though this is true, SatELite is not exactly perfect. For instance, it can be seen in certain instances of the SAT Competition of 2009 that GLUCOSE sometimes had very bad performance in comparison with other solvers exactly because SatELite took, e.g. 130 seconds, but the solving only took 2 seconds. So SatELite slowed down the solving of this instance. Also, SatELite has some limitations, e.g. it cannot handle more than 4'800'000 clauses otherwise it might take just too much time. These are huge drawbacks, and in fact CryptoMiniSat (and, e.g. PrecoSat) overcomes all of these. The memory fragmentation issue remains, though. It could be treated, but that would require about 2-3 weeks of time to get corrected, and I simply don't have that much time. P.S.: Easy solution: rename the variables everywhere. Hard (but less error-prone) solution: use different datastructure for variable values.

Another possible ! optimisation that never made it to CryptoMiniSat (though I hav! e a bran ch in git that achieves it more-or-less) is the close packing of clauses in memory. It can greatly increase the cache-hit ratio, though only for relatively small (<20-40 MByte) problems. The reason why I never got this done is that it is a source of a lot of potential problems. Firstly, there is no point in packing clause sizes that are rare. The most common clause size is 2 (see SAT Competition instances), so it's only logical to pack these clauses. However, this presents a problem: how should the clause be freed after usage? If it was a packed clause, it needs to be freed specially (from the packed heap). But sometimes, non-packed clauses shrink to size 2, so they should become packed. Must these clauses be freed, and then re-allocated from the packed heap? Doesn't that add too much complexity? Also, according to my experience, packed heaps only help when t! he problem is small. For large problems, the cache miss rate will be very high anyway, and so packing won't make much of a difference.

There are some other optimisations that I missed out on, I think. I will one day look through my very messy git tree (with 41 branches and approx. 1600 commits) to see which ones did I once implement and never got working :)

PS: After the start of the SAT Race 2010, I will put all of the git tree up into gitorious. Then, everyone can use it and try to merge these trees into the main tree, and see what happens.

  6. 1925 G. Stearns & M. Stark reported the action of microdilutes on fruit fly tumors. In this fascinating study we see that microdilutes actually altered the genetics of their subjects. A genetically determined tendency to tumor formation ceased to exist after the administration of a microdilution of the tumor itself (isopathy). Controls were used. Other microdilutes were used to no effect. “Experiments with Homeopathic Potentized Substances Given to Dropsophilia Melanogaster with Hereditary Tumors”, The Homeopathic Recorder, 40.
  7. 1925 G. Stearns tested microdilutions of salt on guinea pigs and demonstrated adverse affects from 30c to 1000c sodium chloride. 8. 1927 Karl Konig used microdilutes to experiment on frogs and fungi. He discovered that by using dilutions of of lead and silver nitrate ranging from 1 to 15c he could cause a premature metamorphosis in Rana fusca (common frog tadpoles) or kill them or the fungus in the water. Once again here we see that homeopathic drugs can have negative organic affects. Controls were used and the sinusoidal curve that we see in many experiments of diverse measures is first noted here. “On the Effect of Extremely Diluted (”Homeopathic”) Metal Salt Solutions on the Develop! ment and Growth of Tadpoles. 1. Variation in Fourier transform infrared spectra of some homeopathic potencies and their diluent media. Department of Zoology, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, West Bengal, India. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether potentized homeopathic drugs and their diluent media differ from each other with respect to their Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra.
  2. DESIGN: FTIR spectra of Nux vomica 30C, Lycopodium 30C, Santonin 30C, Cina 30C, Cina 206C, Cina 1006C, and their diluent media 90% ethanol and Ethanol 30C were obtained in the wave number range of 2000-1000 cm1 ! at 20 degrees C. Potassium bromide powder soaked with the potencies, pressed into pellets, and air dried were used to measure the spectra. Because water structures in homeopathic potencies are thought to carry specific information on drug molecules and because O-H bending vibrational band (v2) exclusively belongs to water, the study was restricted to the bands in that wave number region. Alcohol has no absorption in the O-H bending region. RESULTS: The potencies were found to differ from each other and their diluent media in the number of v2 bands, their wave number (cm1), shape, and half-width (cm1) of the bands. Jimenez, Margarita, Stephen Gloyd, "Treatmen! t of Acute Childhood Diarrhea with Homeopathic Medicine: A Ran! domized Clinical Trial in Nicaragua," Pediatrics, May 1994, 93,5:719-25. This randomized double-blind study involving 81 children was conducted in Nicaragua in cooperation with the University of Washington and the University of Guadalajara. The results showed that, the individualized homeopathic medicine showed clinically and statistically significant improvement in the children’s diarrhea, compared to the children treated with placebo. Children that received homeopathic medicine recovered from infection 20% faster than the children treated with placebo. The children who were more sick reacted to the homeopathic treatment in a spectacular manner. In total the study used 18 different homeopathic medicines selected on an individualized basis according to the symptoms of each child.

  1. White mice were exposed to X radiation with a power of 100 to 200 rad (non lethal dosage) and were then evaluated after 24, 48 and 72 hours. Ginseng 6X, 30CH and 200CH and Ruta graveolans 30CH and 200CH were given before and after the radiation. In comparison to mice who received placebo, those who were administered with homeopathic medicines presented significantly less damage in cells and chromosomes. (A.R. Khuda-Bukhsh, S. Banik, "Assessment of Cytogenetic Damage in X-irradiated Mice and its Alteration by Oral Administration of Potentized Homeopathic Drug, Ginseng D200," Berlin Journal of Research in Homeopathy, 1991, 1,4/5:254. 1. In a ! study co nducted in the Moscow People’s Friendship University, the electric activity of the muscular wall of the stomach and duodenum was studied after the effect of the homeopathic medicine Nux Vomica (A. Zavadskaya, K. Privalova, S. Pasin, G. Loukas, Department of Homeopathy).
  1. In an experiment using cats the effect of the medicine Nux Vomica 30CH was studied after applying it to the region of electrodes in the cardia of the stomach, the body, the pylorus and the duodenal bulb. After the application of the medicine, the muscular activity in the body increased by 3.2 times, 2.1 times in the pylorus, while in the duodenal bulb it was reduced by 2.2 times. The experiment proved the ability of the homeopathic medicine Nux Vomica to have an effect on the function of the stomach. The results of this experiment agree with the results of the homeopathy experimental proof for this medicine.
  1. In another research conducted in the same univer! sity, the endurance of mice under hypoxia conditions due to the administration of the homeopathic medicine Hydrogenium Peroxydatum 30CH was studied (A. Chochlov, A. Zavadskaya, Ch. Efstathiou, G. Loukas, Department of Homeopathy). Two groups of mice were used, one of which received homeopathic medicine and the other placebo. Mice who received placebo were the healthier ones while mice that received the homeopathic medicine were the weaker ones. An experimental model was used, where the two groups were placed under high altitude conditions. Mice that received the homeopathic medicine showed faster and better adaptation to hypoxia conditions. Furthermore, when they returned to normal conditions, they reverted to their normal state more quickly and had longer life duration than the mice of the other group.
  1. In another research conducted in the same university, the effect of the homeopathic medicine Berberis vulgaris on the lymphatic drainage was studied ! (A. Zavadskaya et al.). Plant tincture and homeopathic medicin! es in th e 3rd, 6th and 30th potency were given to mice. Initially the time of drainage of the coloring substance from the intestine to the mesentery was measured before providing any medicine. Then the various medicines were tested and the drainage time was measured. The study of the results showed that the potentized forms of Berberis vulgaris increase the lymphatic drainage while the corresponding plant tincture contains it. Especially the 3rd and 6th potencies increased the drainage more in the intestine than in the mesentery while the 30th increased it to the same degree in both the intestine and the mesentery.

“INSTRUMENTAL MEASURING OF DIFFERENT HOMEOPATHIC DILUTIONS OF POTASSIUM IODIDE IN WATER” Igor Jerman, M.D., Sc.D., Full Professor of Theoretical Biology, Maja Berden, M.A. Biology, Metod Å karja, M.A. Physics, BION, Institute for Bioelectromagnetics and New Biology,CelovÅ¡ka 264, 1000 LJUBLJANA, Slovenia (Received October 10,1998; Accepted with revisions March 10, 1999) Although more than 200 years have elapsed since the beginning of homeopathy and in spite of numerous confirmatory scientific experiments, the so-called memory of water is still a highly disputable and controversial theme in scientific circles. To make a contribution to solving this riddle, our research group tried to examine memory properties of water by the method of differential corona discharge Kirlian electrophotography of water-drop pairs. The method is based on a modi! fied form of Kirlian photography with a subsequent thorough computer picture analysis. The potassium iodide (KI) mother solution (0.1M) was diluted in the standard way (without potentisation) or with potentisation (succussion by hand – by striking the vial 60 times against a large book as used traditionally) to 10-3M, 10-6M, 10-10M, 10-16M, 10-17M and 10-24M KI solutions. In the electrophotography method a drop of KI solution was compared with a drop of control water. To get a dependable system of results we compared homeopathic dilutions with ordinary distilled water, sham-potentised distilled water and non-potentised (standard) solutions. The results were analyzed by the Chi-square Goodness-of-fit test and the Sign test. They showed repeatable and statistically significant effects of concentration of KI dilutions as well as potentisation on the corona discharge process (from p < 0.05 to p < 0.00! 1). This indicates that there is some physical basis of molecu! lar (ion ic) information imprinted into water.

This article was interesting:

According to a survey conducted with men who completed the John School program for being arrested for sex purchase in 2006, a typical John is in his 30s, college-graduate, working as an office worker earning $1,800~2,400 a month, and purchased sex at a massage parlor after drinking.

In the Ministry of Justice survey conducted on the 5th, among the 1289 men who responded to the survey, those in their 30s were most numerous, with 645 (50%). They were mostly college graduate (774, 60%) and high school graduate (363, 28.2%).

Among occupations, the most numerous was office workers, with 438 among 1272 who answered (34.4%). 324 of the 1290 (25.1%) who answered said they earn between $1810~2400 a month.

Average number of sex purchase was 15.8, slightly higher compared to the 2005 survey, which was 11.1 times. Most common answer was "2 o! r 3 times", with 290 out of 1221 (23.8%) who answered, but there were 34 (2.8%) who replied "over 100 times."

For a question that asked for multiple answers for the place of sex purchase, over half of the 1290 who answered (765, or 59.1%) selected massage parlor, 703 (54.5%) selected red light districts, and 577 (44.7%) selected entertainment bars. [The Korean's note: Korean word for the "entertainment bar" is 유흥주점, which is a legalistic term for what is better known as "room salon".] For a question that asked for three main reasons for sex purcahse, 798 out of 1293 (61.7%) selected "drinking".
